May 5th is just around the corner, and you are thinking about hosting a festive party. Well you are in the right place. If you are unfamiliar with the holiday, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in Mexico. May 5th is the day Mexico gained victory over France at the battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. So, if you’re wondering how to throw a Cinco de Mayo party, follow this guide.

Festive Decorations

Set the mood with festive decorations to make the event memorable. Be sure to have a lot of colorful plates, lights, cups, and decorations. The lack of color can potentially give the wrong impression of the event.

Tablescape

Just like all of the other decorations, you will want your tablescape to be very colorful to match the theme. Purchase colorful napkins, decorative plates/bowls, and matching silverware. You can also include a table runner to add some more flavor.

Piñata

Festive banners are good whether your event is indoors or outdoors. Banners will help bring more life and excitement to your party. They will also accent the piñata very well!

A sombrero is a traditional Mexican hat. You can use this hat to style your outfit or use it as party decor. A sombrero can be a centerpiece or a serving platter on your table to hold appetizers or desserts. Get creative with your party decor and have fun!

Invitations

Create invitations that will have your guest excited about the party theme. Create or buy invitations that will match the theme of bright and colorful.

Food & Drinks

You are going to want to have a tasty meal and drink for your guest to enjoy. A taco bar would be perfect for this event. Tacos are a traditional dish that are present at a lot of Mexican cultural festivities, they are delicious and easy to serve. Creating a taco bar will allow guest to dress up their tacos according to their preference. To go along with the delicious tacos, make a signature margarita cocktail.

Taco Bar

Here is a list some ingredients you will want to include in your taco bar:

  • Tortilla – you will need something to hold it all together
  • Chicken or beef – your choice of meat for filling
  • Rice – adds a little warmth to your plate
  • Corn – adds some color
  • Beans – canned black beans, sometimes mashed
  • Lettuce – shredded
  • Pico de Gallo – finely chopped tomatoes, white onions, jalapeño, cilantro, and lime
  • Guacamole – mash together avocado, onion, tomatoes, cilantro, jalapeño peppers, lime juice, garlic, and salt
  • Cheese – shredded cheese on top for perfection

Margaritas

  • Crushed ice – got to keep it cool
  • Tequila
  • Triple sec liqueur
  • Natural syrup – mix sugar and water in a small sauce pan, over medium heat. Stir until sugar dissolved and syrup has formed. (about 3 min.) Let cool before making cocktail.
  • A slice of lime – for decor

Squeeze lime juice on the rim of your desired drinking glass, then dip the glass rim into a plate of salt or sugar to coat. Let the glass cool in the refrigerator. Place ice and ingredients into a shaker, shake well. Drain the drink into your glass, then decorate with a slice of lime.

Break the Piñata

This may be considered a child’s game but breaking the piñata can be enjoyed at any age. Fill your piñata with more adult friendly items such a mini shot bottles and fun adult candies.

Chili Pepper Guessing Game

Pick out several different chili peppers. Blindfold the participants so they will not know the mechanics of the game. The peppers will not be labelled, it is up to the participants to be able to guess the flavor of pepper after tasting it. You can add red and green peppers, as well as jalapeño and chili peppers to make it more fun.
